San Francisco Bay Area

We arrived in the California Bay area on Saturday, April 17th.  An immediate highlight of our visit was reconnecting with Rich and Dot Libby, HitchHiker friends, who live in San Lorenzo.  Rich and Dot acted as our tour guides for a couple of days as they are familiar with all the area has to offer.  We took a ferry from Oakland to San Francisco.  We got lots of experience with public transportation as we rode cable cars, buses, and the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit).  There are so many attractions it's impossible to list them all.  Some of the highlights were the Fishermen's Wharf, the markets on the piers, the Oakland Bay Bridge, the Golden Gate Bridge, and the San Francisco skyline.  An interesting sidelight was viewing the large seals sunning themselves on the floating docks near Pier 39.  We appreciated Rich driving us to the various attractions including Half Moon Bay, a popular recreation and commerical fishing location.  Half Moon Bay is well known for the huge waves the surfers like to ride.

In addition to being excellent tour guides, the Libby's also are excellent cooks!  They were gracious enough to invite us to their home for a couple of meals.  Rich did a fantastic job barbequing chickens on his grill for one meal and Dot put her Italian heritage to work preparing mostacollis with marinara sauce another day.  Of course, their wine selection was the best.

  1. We relived out trip to SF in March of 1996 through your telling of the different sights you saw. We were lucky to not have fog when we were there. The self-guided trip to Alcatraz was very interesting too. Continue your safe travel.
